Although the term “xeriscaping” which means “dry landscaping” was coined in the 1970s, pioneer farmers in the 1800s quickly realized that to have successful crops one had to farm differently in these semi-arid conditions then they had done east of the Mississippi River.  Thus these pioneers created new techniques for the planting and care of crops and called it “dry land farming.”

Xeriscaping does not mean plant and ignore, but rather minimal care once the plants are established.  With between 14 and 16 inches of annual precipitation on average on the Front Range of Colorado, whatever is put in the ground is going to need some attention by way of watering to make it grow.

At Phelan Gardens many of our perennials, shrubs and trees would be classified as drought tolerant and thus suitable for the Xeriscape garden.  Listed on the next pages is just a sample of what we carry, not our full stock which varies from year to year.
