-
You can plant trees and shrubs
anytime you can work the soil
-
To plant a tree or shrub, dig a hole as deep
as the root mass and anywhere from 2 to 3 times wider than the existing root
structure
-
Amend the existing soil with a
mix of 1/3rd compost and 2/3rd existing soil
-
Use peat moss if soil is sandy
and compost with manure if soil is clay
-
In clay soil, it benefits the
plant to be a couple inches above the grade after planting
-
If plant is root bound, score
the root ball and separate some of the exterior roots—cut large roots
that may girdle the tree as they grow
-
Water deeply and thoroughly
immediately after planting -- and then water deeply as necessary for the remainder of the growing season
-
Stake large trees on the
windward side with tree straps for the first year -- as necessary
-
Place tree wrap around young
deciduous trees during the winter for at least the first 3 years after
plantingWater all trees and shrubs at
least once a month during the winter months
-
Inspect leaves and branches for insects and
diseases periodically—bring concerns to Phelan staff so issue may be
dealt with quickly
