Phelan Garden's Quick Tips for Garden Center Items
  • Ask questions to understand what the issue really is the then use the right product to solve that problem—fungicides will not rid your yard of insects for example
  • Follow directions carefully on all manufacturer’s labels—on chemicals these labels are legal documents and it is the responsibility of the owner to read and follow these
  • Store all chemicals and fertilizers where children and pets cannot reach them
  • Store garden center items in original containers in a cool and dry place where they will not freeze
  • Use chemicals and fertilizers only as directed and as often as directed on the container
  • Wash all equipment used to spray or spread products after each use
  • Use a separate sprayer for chemicals and for fertilizers
  • Water ground thoroughly and deeply before spreading mulches
  • If you have clay soil, use compost as a soil amendment—if your soil is sandy, use sphagnum peat moss plus compost—organic matter is almost critical to gardening success

NOTE:   Integrated Pest Management (IPM)  Use chemical application ONLY when necessary! Give Mother Nature and natural controls a chance before stepping up the need for toxic synthetic applications.
