While
Sunset Greenhouses was first purchased by the
Phelan family in 1977, today it is open only from mid-March
until mid-June. The
rest of the year it serves primarily as a growing house for
tomatoes in the early spring and poinsettias in the fall.
Phelan
Gardens,
on the other hand, is open 7 days a week year-round
and is a full-service nursery and garden center.

January – March finds the staff seeding, growing and
transplanting what will become many of our first annual and
perennial offerings of the season.
During this time shrubs and trees are brought in,
fertilizers and mulches are unloaded, the Garden
Center
is stocked and many of the administrative tasks that make the
seasons go more smoothly are completed.
Indoor foliage is in big demand and landscape
consultations pick up as people begin to look ahead to the
coming season.

By mid-April both Phelan’s and Sunset are ready for the season
to begin—even if Mother Nature is not yet ready.
Many people are rearing to go, but we have to remind them
that the last average frost day in Colorado Springs is around the 15th
of May.

From mid-April to mid-October the season is in full swing.
After the flowerbeds and container gardens are planted
many people turn their attention once again to their indoor
foliage. Shrubs and
trees can be—and are—planted throughout this period.
