Winter Landscape

When the winter causes the grass to go brown, the trees and shrubs to go dormant and the perennials to freeze down to the ground, all we can do is remember how beautiful the landscape looked in the summer. If your gorgeous garden from last summer is drab now, perhaps you would like to plan for some winter appeal.

Evergreens are a great reminder that there is still life in the garden. Beyond pines and junipers, there are some perennials that also keep their foliage. Many plants that are not evergreen are used for special effects. Dogwood shrubs have red or yellow twigs, ornamental grasses retain their plumes, and late blooming perennial flowers can be left on their stalks to create interesting effects with the snow.

If your winter garden looks acceptable, but you want to add some visual interest in a unique way, then try browsing at garage sales or the flea market. You might fined an appealing knickknack like an old wagon wheel, or a small bench or stool for a great price! Or take a walk in the foothills. You may just stumble across a gnarled tree stump or a unique stone. If it catches your eye in the wild, it will catch your eye in the barren winter garden as well.
