Summer Gardening To-Do List

Garden

  • Deadhead flowers as they fade to promote future blooms
  • Note places in the landscape that need redoing or additional plants—plan to work on this area in the fall or spring
  • Fertilize annuals and perennials with a good liquid fertilizer—follow directions on the container carefully as too much fertilizer can kill the plants
  • Water the garden deeply and thoroughly—best to do this in the early morning hours
  •  In early August, pinch back spindly annuals and fertilize to produce more blooms
  • Stop fertilizing after mid August to encourage plants to harden off before the first freeze
  • To encourage additional crops, harvest vegetables as they become ripe

Trees and Shrubs

  • Water trees and shrubs deeply and thoroughly about once a week
  • Fertilize rose bushes after the first round of flowers have faded
  • Deadhead roses after the blooms begin to fade
  • Periodically check leaves and branches for insects and diseases—treat immediately if found

Lawn Care

  • Apply second application of fertilizer around Memorial Day and third application around July 4th  --this July 4th application may be eliminated in times of drought or temperatures about 90 degrees
  • Avoid fertilizer that is high in nitrogen when temperatures are hot - use slow release instead or skip application until cooler weather prevails
  • Mow lawn no less than 21/2” high and never take off more that 1/3 of the growth in a single cutting
  • During the hottest parts of the summer, lawns should get approximately 2” of water per week instead of the normal 1” per week during other times

General Maintenance

  • Keep your lawn mower blade sharp throughout the mowing season
  • Monitor your irrigation system for proper coverage—adjust heads and time settings as needed
  • Check for diseases and insects that might be attacking plants and lawns
  • Keep all chemicals stored away from the reach of children or pets
  • Watch for grasshoppers if weather has been hot and dry
  • Watch for slugs if weather has been cool and wet
  • Weed the garden and lawn once a week or as needed to maintain control of the landscape
