Cabbage - Not Just for Slaw Anymore

Add zest to your borders or containers by including ornamental cabbage in your planting schemes.  These unusual plants make a bold statement in terms of size, form and color.  Cabbage

Large, loose  outer leaves of a soft gray-green, surround a more compact center in brilliant tones of pink, carmine, and cream.  The leaf edges are crimped, ruffled, or fringed providing a wonderful contrast to other flowering or foliage plants.

For a front entrance or patio area, plant a combination of ‘Dynasty White’ cabbage, Shasta Daisy—‘Marconi’ is very pretty—and white dianthus.  Add nicotianna, stock or roses for scent.  Choose pastel or white flowers that will stand out in evening light.

‘Dynasty Red’ or ‘Dynasty Pink’ varieties look wonderful with complimentary shades of blue, rose or purple.  Salvias, coneflowers, pestemons or foxgloves are available in these shades and will add height and interest to your planting.

Ornamental cabbage looks great with many herbs, too.  Place it next to purple or green sage, silver thyme, artemesias or lavender, all of which echo the gray “bloom” on the cabbage leaf.

The ruffled leaves add a special touch to floral arrangements and salads.  Like its country cousin, green cabbage, the ornamentals are edible though perhaps not quite as tender.

These unique plants are not difficult to grow.  They prefer an average soil in sun or part shade, making them versatile for placement in your garden.  Their color will intensify in cooler autumn weather then many other annuals are past their prime.  For a really lush display, plant in groups of three or five about 12 – 15 inches apart.  Keep the soil evenly moist in warmer weather for optimum growth.  You will be rewarded for your efforts with a fabulous fall display.
