Spring Catalogs - To Order or Not to Order

The catalog companies are out in full force this time of year, offering everything from seed to the cocktail tree that produces three types of fruit!  Vying for the business of gardeners across the United States, these companies lump all states and growing conditions together, offering “discounts” and “ guarantees” on plants almost too hard to pass up.

Just a few words of caution when contemplating plant purchases through the mail:

  • Are you purchasing well-established material of premium quality or has your order been stored bareroot in storage for weeks on end?

  • What are the advantages of bareroot vs, potted plants?

  • What happens to plants when they arrive too early or too late, or arrive in poor condition?

  • If replacement plants are sent, when will they arrive?

  • Will these plants thrive in Colorado Springs’ soil, elevation, and moisture levels?

  • Are there reliable people on staff to answer questions about the plants purchased?

  • Is there an 800 number, or website, available to discuss any questions or problems>

  • With shipping and handling costs, are you really saving money?

  • Are the garden designs illustrated in these catalogs well thought out or simply a marketing tool to get you to buy more?

While Phelan Gardens prides itself on the great variety, quality, selection and advice we offer, you will not find the cocktail tree or the tomato seed that produces 10 pounds of fruit in our nursery.  We want our customers to be successful while having access to new varieties and sound information on the plants purchased.  As both growers and plant buyers, we can often locate hard-to-find plants and provide information for you.  Knowing and seeing what you are buying can make a huge difference in the success of a beautiful flower or a productive vegetable garden.

For any questions you have on this article, or any topic of concern, email us—or better yet, come by and talk to one of our professional staff members.  Remember, Phelan Gardens is open year-round!
