A Little Elbow Grease Goes a Long Way

Fortunately for us in Colorado, we are blessed with seasons!  While autumn marks the finale of most outside chores, proper cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment will make for a beautiful start to next spring.

Add life to your garden hose by storing it inside a garage, water-free, preferably on a hose reel or apparatus that does not place any stress or awkward bends to it.

Remove soil residue from metal tools with a wire brush or water.  Prevent rust by spraying metal with WD-40.  Linseed oil applied to wooden handles will help prevent cracking and future slivers.  It is a great idea to sharpen tools before storage.  Lubrication of pivot points and springs make for effortless pruning next spring.

Sprayers should be washed thoroughly including all parts and pieces.    It has been noted that most pesticides require triple rinsing / washing.  Ensure that sprayers are allowed to dry by hanging upside down.

Can you visualize your lawn mower starting next spring with the first pull?  If you still have the owner’s manual, look over the winterization suggestions.  It is always a good idea to store clean and lubricated.  If your mower or tiller has a 4-cycle engine, now is a good idea to change the oil.  Remove any remaining gas from all power equipment by running dry or with the use of an old turkey baster.
