For those who want to bring fall color into their landscape, there are many options to consider: Brilliant reds are found with the maples (acer ginnala), the fluorescent Burning Bush(euonymus atlatus), all of the Sumacs (rhus sp.), and the Western Cherry (prunus besseyii), to name a few. Bright yellow leaves are common to many of our trees, such as Ash (fraxinus), Honeylocust (gleditsia), Hackberry (celtis occidentalis), Linden (tilis sp.) and Maple (acer sp.) Shrubs with berries are very attractive as well. The berries of the English Euonymus have an outer pink coat with orange seeds. The coloration of the Virginia Creeper (parthenocissus) in fall includes lively red and bronze leaves with black berries. Other shrubs known for their colorful berries are Chokecherry (prunus virginiana), Cotoneaster, Gooseberry (ribes), and Snowberry (symphocarpus). Just a reminder—if there is little or no soil moisture, most of these showboats turn brown with the first frost. To encourage bright fall colors, make sure you water adequately before it gets cold!
