High Altitude Gardening

Many of our Phelan Garden’s customers living in the Monument, Palmer Lake, Black Forest and even Briargate areas find gardening to be more of a challenge due to the increased altitude.  The growing season is a bit shorter as the frost ends later in the spring and returns earlier in the fall making the days and nights cooler than they are in Colorado Springs proper.  Some plants adapt well to this climate while others have only marginal success.  In addition, wildlife issues become more of a concern in these areas with questions being brought to us regularly on what to do about the deer in particular.  In an effort to address the challenges of gardening in a higher altitude we have compiled a list of web links that offer many excellent recommendations including plants that will do best in higher elevations.

We carry the plants, soil amendments and mulches that will aid in your gardening success as well as products that will address wildlife control.  We also are available to answer your questions, so stop by and talk to a Phelan staff member about your concerns and we will try to be of assistance.
